Being found is only the start

A high Google ranking is not much use if nobody gets in touch.

For a small business, the real job of search is to bring the right person to the right page and make it easy for them to take the next step.

That sounds obvious, but many websites get this wrong. They focus heavily on being found, then leave visitors to work out what the business does, whether it is right for them and how to make contact.

A good page should make those things clear within seconds.

Say what you do

Start with a simple description of the service. Avoid clever headlines that say very little. Tell people what you do, where you do it and who it is for.

The customer’s view

Three steps from search to contact

  1. Find you

The right service, in the right area.

  2. Recognise you

Up-to-date details and photos of the business.

  3. Contact you

A working number or a clear booking link.

Test the steps on your phone, as a new customer would.

Give a reason to trust you

Next, give them a reason to trust you. Reviews, testimonials, examples of past work and clear pricing information can all help. You do not need dozens of trust signals. You just need enough to remove doubt.

Make the next step obvious

Then make the next step obvious. If you want enquiries, put the phone number, contact form or quote button where people can actually see it.

I often see businesses spend money improving their Google visibility while overlooking the page people land on. In many cases, improving that page is the cheaper and quicker win.

Search gets someone through the door. Your website still has to convince them to stay.
